D̲h̲arra (395 words), a term denoting, in the Ḳurʾān or ḥadīt̲h̲s, the smallest possible appreciable quantity. The Ḳurʾān uses it five times, in the expression mit̲h̲ḳāl al-d̲h̲arra, «the weight of a d̲h̲arra» ,—to extol the Omniscience of God (X, 61; XXXIV, 3), or His absolute Omnipotence (XXXIV, 20), or His supreme Justice in retribution: IV, 40 and the celebrated text XCIX, 7-8 «He who shall have done the weight of one d̲h̲arra of good shall see it; he who shall have done the weight of one d̲h̲arra of evil shall see it».

Commentators on the Ḳurʾān and interpreters of ḥadīt̲h̲s have explained d̲h̲arra by two images, both of which go back to Ibn ʿAbbās. 1). From the most usual meaning of the root: powder, dust. The d̲h̲arra is the dust which remains clinging to the hand after the rest has been blown off (the sense recollected in tafsīr, for example, by K̲h̲āzin in xcix, 7-8); or the weightless dust, seen when sunlight shines through a window (id., iv, 40). 2). The image of the «red (black) ant», by a kind of equivalence d̲h̲arra-namla (al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī): «the weight of the head of a red ant», (K̲h̲āzin iv, 40); «little ant» (xcix, 7-8); «little red ant» (x, 61), etc.—The d̲h̲arra is also said to be equivalent to «the hundredth part of a grain of barley».

In translation d̲h̲arra is generally rendered as «atom» (cf. R. Blachère: «weight of an atom», except for iv, 40: «weight of an ant»). L. Massignon, Passion d’al-Ḥallād̲j̲ , Paris 1922, 550, gives d̲h̲arra in the sense of atom with nuḳta («point») in order to ¶ explain the d̲j̲awhar fard («elemental substance») of the kalām and the falsafa . It is noticeable, however, that d̲h̲arra was not generally used as the technical term to denote the philosophical atomism of Democritus, Epicurus and the Muslim «atomists». Two technical expressions were used in preference: d̲j̲uzʾ [q.v.], «part» (indivisible), and d̲j̲awhar fard. On the other hand, modern Arabic readily renders the atom of modern physics by d̲h̲arra (d̲j̲uzʾ becoming «molecule»).

Thus Arabic vocabulary is careful to distinguish between three terminologies: 1) physical sciences: d̲h̲arra, atom; 2) mathematical sciences: nuḳta, geometrical point (thus Ibn Sīnā, Risāla fi ’l-Ḥudūd); 3) philosophy: d̲j̲uzʾ and d̲j̲awhar fard, «atom»,—and in this way to emphasize that the last usage does not include the atom of modern physics.
