(Izutsu, Concepts, 120).

Ṣūfism и qur'ān).

A sense of superiority which manifests itself in an overbearing manner. Acting arrogantly or insolently has different connotations in reference to God and his creatures. In the case of God, the creator of the whole universe and the supreme authority on heaven and earth, his expression of his superiority is devoid of any negative connotation. «The Great» (al-kabīr) is mentioned six times in the Qurʾān as one of God’s attributes; five times in association with «the Supreme» (al-ʿalī, q 4:34; 22:62; 31:30; 34:23; 40:12) and once with «the Exalted» (al- mutaʿāl, q 13:9). The Qurʾān specifies, «God possesses greatness (kibriyāʾ) in the heavens and on earth» (q 45:37). As a divine attribute, «exalting in his greatness» (al- mutakabbir) means that God exalts himself over his creation (q.v.) and transcends the characteristics of his creation.

Humans who claim to be great are guilty of an unwarranted assumption of dignity, authority (q.v.) and knowledge. A human who claims any of these attributes is to be considered an infidel (kāfir) and should be punished as a polytheist. In fact unbelief (kufr), «as man’s denial of the Creator, manifests itself most characteristically in various acts of insolence, haughtiness, and presumptuousness» (Izutsu, Concepts, 120; see belief and unbelief). The basic difference between God and his creatures is that «whereas God is infinite and absolute, every creature is finite. All things have potentialities but no amount of potentiality may allow what is finite to transcend its finitude and pass into infinity. This is what the Qurʾān means when it says that everything except God is ‘measured out’ (qadar or qadr, taqdīr, etc.) and is hence dependent upon God, and that whenever a creature claims complete self-sufficiency or independence (istighnāʾ, istikbār), it thus claims infinitude and a share in divinity (shirk)» (F. Rahman, Major themes, 67). Human arrogance is a form of injustice (ẓulm) against God and the self (q 6:93), as well as against other people. «Those regarded as weak» (mustaḍʿafūn) are a category of people mentioned in the Qurʾān as subjugated by the arrogant (alladhīna stakbarū, q 7:75; 34:31-3). The Qurʾān urges Muslims to fight for the weak (q 4:75).

The common word for «arrogance» (kibr) occurs only once with this sense in the Qurʾān: «Those who dispute about the signs of God without any authority, there is nothing in their hearts but an [unfounded] sense of greatness (kibr) that they will never [actually] attain» (q 40:56). Related to kibr is the verbal noun kibriyāʾ (greatness) which occurs twice in the Qurʾān, once as one of God’s attributes, «To him be greatness throughout the heavens and the earth: and he is exalted in power full of wisdom» (q 45:37). The second occurrence is associated with the allegation made by Pharaoh (q.v.) and his people against Moses (q.v.) and Aaron (q.v.) that they wanted to turn the people of Pharaoh away from their traditions in order for Moses and his people to gain greatness, al-kibriyāʾ, in the land of Egypt (q 10:78). Moses' prayer, on the other hand, asks God to provide protection for him and his people against every arrogant one (mutakabbir, q 40:27). Conceiving of oneself as great and superior is considered by the Qurʾān to be claiming one of God’s attributes, because only he is great (al-kabīr).. Thus, arrogance in man is a grievous sin (kabīra, see sin, major and minor). Acting insolently or behaving arrogantly is to claim God’s position (q 59:23). It is reported in one of the pronouncements of God preserved as a ḥadīth and not found in the Qurʾān (ḥadīth qudsī, see ḥadīth and the qurʾān) that God said, «Magnificence (al-ʿaẓama) is my garment and greatness (al-kibriyāʾ) is my covering. Whoever claims them surely will be thrown into hell.» A well-known ḥadīth of Muḥammad reads, «Whoever has in his heart the smallest portion of arrogance (kibr) will never enter paradise.»

Al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111) explains that the arrogant person (al-mutakabbir) is one who considers the position of every one else to be inconsiderable. He looks down on others and treats them like slaves. If arrogance manifests itself as mere insolence, it is wicked behavior. Whoever claims absolute greatness is nothing but a liar, because this position is absolutely inconceivable for anyone but God. Al-Ghazālī concedes that some individuals who enjoy higher positions or authority in society have the right to be somewhat arrogant. He explains that, according to mystical terminology, «arrogant» (mutakabbir) also may refer to the ascetic gnostic, i.e. one who renounces whatever keeps him from serving and communicating with God (al-Maqṣad al-asnā, 75).

Takabbur and istikbār, acting insolently or behaving arrogantly have different connotations in reference to God and to his creatures. For humans, acting arrogantly is a form of behavior directed towards other people on the grounds that they are inferior. It has been defined as undue assumption of dignity, authority, or knowledge, aggressive conceit, presumption or haughtiness. In the case of God, understood as the creator of the whole universe and the supreme authority on heaven and earth, arrogance is devoid of such a connotation. As a divine attribute al-mutakabbir means that he exalts himself over doing injustice to his creation, or that he transcends the characteristics of his creation. Besides being great, high and self-exalted, he is also exalted in might (jabbār). Whoever acquires or claims any of these attributes is to be considered kāfir and should be punished as a polytheist. In fact kufr, «as man’s denial of the Creator, manifests itself most characteristically in various acts of insolence, haughtiness, and presumptuousness» (Izutsu, Concepts, 120).

The first act of arrogance was committed by Satan when he refused the command of God to prostrate before Adam (see adam and eve). For this he was condemned as an infidel. Although Satan represents the most wicked example of arrogance (q 7:13; 38:74, 75), Pharaoh became the human reflection of Satan when he rejected the message God revealed to Moses (q 28:39) and misled his people into acting arrogantly (q 7:133; 10:75; 23:46; 29:39). Thus Satan and Pharaoh became the two representative symbols for the disastrous consequences of arrogance and insolence (takabbur and istikbār). The majority of Muslim theologians and jurists consider Satan’s arrogance, and to a great extent Pharaoh’s, to be the act of disobedience that led to the existence of the devil (q.v.) on earth. The jurist and theologian Ibn Ḥazm (d. 456/1064), with the obvious intention of condemning speculative theology (kalām), considers Satan the first one to employ analogy(qiyās) in religious matters.

The view of the famous mystic al-Ḥallāj (d. 309/940) regarding Satan and Pharoah was exceptional. He saw their arrogance as a manifestation of their awareness of the divine nature of all creatures. Their apparent disobedience was thus in consonance with their real inner nature. Though Satan was cursed and expelled from God’s presence, his loyalty and sincerity did not change. For his part, Pharaoh was drowned, but he did not betray himself. Al-Ḥallāj considered them his true models (Ṭawāsīn, 16-20). As is to be expected, this view was totally rejected by the mainstream of Islamic thought (see ṣūfism and the qurʾān).

There are many references in the Qurʾān to communities, groups and individuals who insolently and arrogantly rejected the word of God. In addition to the subjects of Pharaoh, the Qurʾān mentions the neighbors of Noah (q.v.; q 71:7), the people of ʿĀd (q.v.; q 41:15), the people of Thamūd (q.v.; q 7:75-6), the people of Midian (q.v.; q 7:88) and the pagan Meccans (passim). Apart from these specific groups, a number of general classes of people are portrayed as arrogant, including those in defiance of right (q 7:146); those who dispute about the signs of God (q 40:35; see signs); those who refuse to serve God (q 4:172); those who tell lies about God, scornfully rejecting his revelation (q 6:93; see revelation and inspiration); those who turn away from listening to the Qurʾān and prefer frivolous tales (lahw al-ḥadīth, q 31:6); those who ignore the revelations of God completely (q 45:8); those who do not believe in the afterlife (q 16:22); and the hypocrites (munāfiqūn, see hypocrites and hypocrisy) of Medina (q 63:1, 7-9). Hell will be the final dwelling place of all of these arrogant people (q 16:29; 39:60, 72; 40:76).

Those who are not arrogant, but rather are humble, unconditionally obey God and willingly accept his revelation. The Qurʾān several times refers to those who do not disdain to be God’s servants (lā yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatihi, q 7:206), e.g. the followers of Jesus (q.v.; q 5:83), the angels (q.v.) and all of creation (q 16:48-9; 21:19) and those who believe in the Qurʾān (q 32:15). In contrast with the arrogant disobedience of Satan and Pharaoh, Jesus, who is described as a servant of God (q 19:30-2), was neither overbearing (jabbār) nor miserable (shaqī). He will never disdain (lan yastankifa) to serve and worship God (q 4:172). The believers are those who accept the Qurʾān. When the verses are recited to them, they fall down in adoration (q.v.), praising their Lord. They are never puffed up with pride (lā yastakbirūna, q 32:15). The ideal behavior expected from Muslims that makes them worthy of the title «servants of God most gracious» (ʿibād al-raḥmān) is, among other things, that they walk on the earth in humility (q 25:63). The advice of the sage Luqmān (q.v.) to his son was «Do not put on a contemptuous mien toward people and do not walk on the earth exuberantly, for God does not like any self-important boaster» (q 31:18). All those who disdain his worship and are arrogant (man yastankif ʿan ʿibādatihī wayastakbir, q 4:172) will be gathered together to be questioned and punished grievously, while those who believe and perform righteous deeds will be given their just rewards and more from God’s bounty (q 4:173). The mustaḍʿafūn, the ill-treated or the disinherited, is a category of people mentioned in the Qurʾān as oppressed by the mustakbirūn (q 7:75; 34:31-3). The Qurʾān urges Muslims to fight for the liberation of the mustaḍʿafūn (q 4:75) and encourages them in the meantime to resist such oppression even by emigrating to another land (q 4:97). Istikbār thus leads to oppression which is a grievous form of ẓulm, injustice against others.

It is worthwhile to refer briefly to the recent political manipulation of the notion of arrogance. The old slogan of the national movements in the Arab and Muslim countries through the sixties was commonly «The struggle against international imperialism» (al-kifāḥ ḍidda l-istiʿmār al-ʿālamī). The increasing power of the Islamic movements in the seventies led to the replacement of the non-qurʾānic concept of «imperialism» with «arrogance» (istikbār). Before the Islamic revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini (d. 1989) started using the concept in reference to the Shah’s regime. «The mustakbirūn were those who supported the regime of the Shah. After the revolution, mustakbirūn was used in a broader sense to describe also external enemies of the Islamic Republic» (Gieling, Sacralization, 100). The same negative connotation was applied to «the industrialized world, with the United States as its major representative. In this sense, istikbār was synonymous with other concepts with a negative connotation like colonialism and imperialism» (Gieling, Sacralization, 100). During the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88), the concept was used to condemn Saddam Hussain and other enemies. See also god and his attributes .

«Твойные не имеют доли в хорошей похвале» (laysa li-l-mukhtāli fī ḥusni al-thanā'i naṣībun, al-Maydānī, 2: 189, № 3308 / ed. Freytag, 2: 433, № 85).

-Zabīdī, Tāj, 3: 318b; Lane, 1: 326a-b). vii) b-gh-y: «открыто совершать бесчинства из чрезмерного тщеславия». Q 23: 7, fa-man ibtaghā warā'a dhālika fa-ulā'ika humu l -'ādūna: "Но кто ищет больше, чем те, это те, кто являются нарушителями "(Trans. Pickthall).

'Alī, 26: 140: Muqātil, Tafsirr, 4: 96-97 (все объявление Q 49:13); al-Qurṭubī, 17: 255 (объявление Q 57:20).

Gilliot and Larcher, 119-20). (Gilliot, Poète ou prophète ?, passim).

Sallām, Tafsirr, ed.

  • k-b-r — 27:27, 27:35; 16:29; 39:60, 39:72; 40:76; 59:23
  • f-kh-r — 4:36; 31:18; 57:20, 57:33
  • b-gh-y — 10:90-1; 28:76-8; 42:26; 42:41-2
  • b-ṭ-r — 28:58
  • ʿ-t-w; ʿ-t-y — 7:166; 25:21; 65:8
  • j-b-r — 19:12-4, 19:31-2; 40:35
  • ṭ-gh-w; ṭ-gh-y — 2:15; 5:64, 5:68; 10:7-8, 10:11; 18:80; 38:55-6; 79:15-19, 79:37-41; 91:11-2
  • gh-n-y — 96:6-7
  • ʿ-l-y — 23:46; 27:13-4; 28:83

Houdas and Marçais, 4: 337). Houdas and Marçais, 4:92, Ibn Ḥibbān, Ṣaḥīḥ, bk. 42 , Libās, XII, 261, № 5444, bk. 44, Tawāḍu', 494, № 5681, см.

Gilliot, In consilium tuum

Arkoun, 296-9) и vainglory (ṣalaf; Miskawayh, 136; trans. Arkoun, 248).

Arrogance and haughtiness, for which there are a number of terms in Arabic, are vices that figure prominently in Islamic judgements of human nature and behaviour. In pre-Islamic times boasting was a familiar literary trope in the poetical jousts between Arab tribes. The arrogance of man towards God is referred to numerous times in the Qurʾān, and in the Islamic traditions (ḥadīth), arrogance and haughtiness are discussed in relation to Muḥammad’s preaching, with those who rejected it often being accused of arrogance.

1. Semantics

Arabic is rich in terms and phrases that denote various forms of arrogance (haughtiness, pride, and other such behaviours). The principal nomina verbi, or verbal nouns, grouped by primary and secondary roots, are given below.

Primary roots: i) k-b-r, kibr, kibriyāʾ, takabbur, istikbār: «arrogance, haughtiness, presumption» (al-Dāmaghānī, 1:92; al-Rāghib, 420-3; Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 792-3). ii) f-kh-r fakhr, mufākhara, iftikhār: «pride, haughtiness, boasting» (al-Rāghib, 374). Mufākhara has both a reflexive mean-ing—"self-praise"—and also the transitive meaning of assigning precedence and glory, and, in addition, the word can refer to rivalry with other tribes or groups. It is hence a synonym of tafākhur, munāẓara, munāfara, and tafāḍul. In a speech attributed to the first of the Rightly Guided caliphs, Abū Bakr (d. 13/634), the motif/topos exemplified in Genesis 3:19, «…for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return» appears: «Be cautious against pride (fakhr)! What is pride for someone created of clay (turāb) and returning to clay?» (Ṣafwat, 1:185). iii) kh-y-l, khuyalāʾ, and, less frequently, khiyalāʾ; also khayl, khayla, khāl, makhīla: «conceit or pride arising from an excellence fancied or imagined in oneself» (al-Zabīdī, 28:454a; Lane, 1:835b; al-Rāghib, 162-3; Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 294). The root occurs in several proverbs, for example: «Conceitedness (makhīla) kills the conceited (khāʾil) himself» (al-Maydānī, 2:316, no. 4105/ed. Freytag, 2:696, no. 356; cf. the proverb attributed to Solomon: «Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth» (Proverbs 27:1).) «The conceited has no share in good praise» (laysa li-l-mukhtāli fī ḥusni al-thanāʾi naṣībun, al-Maydānī, 2:189, no. 3308/ed. Freytag, 2:433, no. 85). Kh-y-l can also signify «opinion» (ẓann) and "imagination, " as the root appears in the following verse of al-ʿAjjāj (d. after 99/717): «Snobbery (wa-l-khālu) is one of the cloaks of the ignorant/And time [or destiny] contains occasions of heedlessness for those who are heedless» (wa-l-khālu thawbun min thiyābi l-juhhāl/wa-l-dahru fīhi ghaflatun li-l-ghuffāl, al-Zabīdī, 28:451a; al-Ṭabarī, Tafsīr, ed. Shākir, 8:349). iv) ʿ-j-b, ʿujb, iʿjāb: «pride, vanity, smugness» (al-Rāghib, 322; cf. vi, below). v) ʿ-ẓ-m, ʿaẓama: «haughty and proud behaviour.» ʿAẓama and especially taʿaẓẓum are considered to be synonymous with takabbur (Lane, 2:2807a; Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, 2:85).

Secondary roots: vi) t-y-h, tīh: «conceitedness, haughtiness.» The muʿjab believes his own opinion of himself with some reservation, whereas the conceited (tāʾih) believes in himself unreservedly. The word is derived from tāha, meaning «to roam in the desert without attaining one’s goal.» The phrase «he behaves proudly (or conceitedly or vainly) towards his people» (huwa yatīhu ʿalā qawmihi) is found in the literature (see al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 3:318b; Lane, 1:326a-b). vii) b-gh-y: «openly committing outrages out of excessive conceit.» For example, see Q 23:7, fa-man ibtaghā warāʾa dhālika fa-ulāʾika humu l-ʿādūna, «But whoso seekest more than that, those are they who are transgressors» (trans. Pickthall). Al-Rāghib al-Iṣfahānī (d. early-fifth/eleventh century) describes this form of arrogance (in Lane’s translation) as «seeking to exceed the just bounds in respect of that which one aims at, or endeavours after, whether one actually exceed or do not» (Lane, 1:231), ṭalabu tajāwuzi l-iqtiṣāri fīmā yutaḥarrā, tajāwazahu am lam yatajāwazhu (quoted by al-Zabīdī, 37:179b). (Izutsu, 137-9; al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 37:179b; Badawi and Abdel Haleem 104-6). viii) b-ṭ-r, baṭar: «wantonness, cockiness, hubris, vanity» (al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 10:212-3; Lane, 1:217); «exulting and behaving with pride, acting insolently and ungratefully» (Izutsu, 139-40; Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 97). ix) ʿ-t-w or ʿ-t-y: «insolence, presumption, recalcitrance» (Izutsu, 139-40); «to be averse to obedience» (al-nabwatu ʿan al-ṭāʿati, al-Rāghib in al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 38:533b, Lane, 2:1951). «But when they turned away disdainfully from (ʿatawu ʿan) that which they had been forbidden, We said to them: Be you [as] apes, despised!» (Q 7:166); Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 598; Zammit, 280-1; Ilse Lichtenstadter, "And become ye accursed apes, " JSAI 14 (1991), 153-75. x) j-b-r jibriyāʾ, tajabbur. For the ancient Arabs jabbār, or nakhla jabbāra, signi-fied a palm tree so tall that its fruits cannot be reached (Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, 2:81). Both tajabbur and nakhwa (cf. xi below) are mentioned by ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib: «Conceit comes from presumptuousness, and haughtiness from affected arrogance» (inna l-khuyalāʾa mina l-tajabburi wa-l-nakhwata min al-takabburi (Ṣafwat, 1:345). xi) n-kh-w, nakhwa: «haughtiness arising from a sense of honour» (ʿAbbās, 224: nakhwat al-sharaf wa-l-tīh, «the haughtiness of honour and pride»); cf. Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 139; Zammit, 109. xii) ṭ-gh-w or ṭ-gh-y: «an attitude of contumacy or recalcitrant pride that exceeds all bounds»; "Go thou unto Pharaoh. Lo! he has rebelled (ṭaghā), " (al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 38:492b; Izutsu, 140-2; Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 566; Zammit, 270). xiii) gh-n-y, istighnāʾ: «considering oneself rich; putting unbounded confidence in one’s own power; a state of self-satisfaction» (Izutsu, 142-3; Lane, 2:2303; Badawi and Abdel Haleem, 677). xiv) ṣ-l-f, ṣalaf: «exaggerating one’s own qualities, or proudly arrogating to oneself more than one is due» (Lane, 2:1718; Ibn Manẓūr, 4:2483-4; ʿAbbās, 224). xv) j-w-ẓ, jawẓ: «roughness and pride, especially in manner of walking and speaking loudly» (al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 12:214, 38:533: istakbara wa-jāwaza l-ḥadd, «to be excessively arrogant»; Izutsu, 139-40). xvi) ʾ-b-h, ʾubbaha: "greatness, majesty, " but also «pride, self-magnification, or haughtiness» (Lane, 1:10; see section 5., below, the letter of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib). xvii) ʿ-l-y, ʿuluww: «to deem oneself above someone or something» (Izutsu, 133).

2. Honour and pride among the early Arabs

Our information on the so-called «era of ignorance» (al-Jāhiliyya) comes mostly from the Islamic sources that emphasise, on one hand, the alleged superiority of the Arabs and their language as a preparatio prophetica (Gilliot and Larcher, Language, EQ 3:109-35), and, on the other, evoke a damnatio memoriae of pre-Islamic times in contrast to the qualities (faḍāʾil, «merits and superiority») of Islam and its ethics. It must be remembered that the great classical Arabic dictionaries themselves have been Islamised.

Some aspects of the ethics and values of the ancient Arabs were integrated into Islam, while others have lived on and even persist to the present, despite the fact that they have not been sanctioned by Muslim moralists, jurists, or theologians. Several Muslim scholars of the classical era noted that the advent of Islam brought with it changes in Arabic vocabulary, not only in the form of new words (Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, 1:140-1), but above all in the shifts in connotation that took place in already existing vocabulary items (Ibn Fāris, 78-81, 88-93; taken up by al-Suyūṭī, al-Muzhir, chap. 20, 1:294-303; Gilliot, Exégèse, 87-8). Words denoting arrogance are a case in point.

Self-praise or self-glorification (mufākahra, fakhr) may have been one of the first forms of poetical expression of the Arabs (Farès, 185-92; Wagner, 1:109-11; El Tayib, 81-5). The most frequent motifs of ancient Arabic poetry include: praise of war, the aim of which was to boost the combative spirit; praise of the tribe generally, in the service of spreading its glories and honour and supporting its designs; praise of the chief of the tribe; praise of the high born; praise of the tribesmen; and extolling the beauty of women. These themes are found in the poetry of love and pleasure, for instance, without the moral limitations later imposed by revelation. How far poets could go was determined by the tribal code based on honour (sharaf, but also ʿirḍ) and glory (majd), that is «illustriousness on account of birth» (cf. illā bi-l-abāʾ, "[there is] no honour and glory save from the forefathers, " al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 23:493a).

Individually and collectively acquired merit (ḥasab, in the former case, nasab, "kinship, lineage, " in the latter) were also important, as was generosity (karam), all of which were considered forms of «illustriousness acquired by oneself» (cf. «[individual merit and generosity] depend on the man» (fī l-rajul); al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 23:493a).

Poetical jousts of glorification were held during the great markets or annual fairs of Arabia, such as that of ʿUkāẓ, in Mecca, and there was a special verb meaning «to compete at ʿUkāẓ» (taʿākaẓa; al-Zabīdī, Tāj, 20:238, 240; Farès, 187, n. 1; cf. Lammens, 135). On fakhr and aḥsāb (noble descent) in the Jāhiliyya, see al-Qurṭubī, 16:431-2; al-Ṭabarī, ed. ʿAlī, 26:140: Muqātil, Tafsīr, 4:96-97 (all ad Q 49:13); al-Qurṭubī, 17:255 (ad Q 57:20).

3. Arrogance as a rhetorical device: Muḥammad’s preaching

Muḥammad (and his followers) had to both fight against and compromise with existing values and attitudes, which were in some respects incompatible with the submissiveness he demanded to the law of God (dīn; Bravmann, 34) and to his own leadership (siyāda). His ambition to become the only chief and tribal leader of the Arabs appears in his numerous declarations (which call to mind the Gospel of John, in which Jesus says «I am» no less than 24 times; Harner, 4). See for example, the phrase from Jābir b. ʿAbdallāh, within a tradition on the intercession of Muḥammad: (he said): «[…] I am the overlord (sayyid) of the sons of Adam, [and I say it] without haughtiness (wa lā fakhra)…. I am the first who will enter Paradise, [and I say it] without haughtiness…» (al-Ṭabarānī, al-Awsaṭ, 5:202, no. 5082; Ibn al-Athīr, 2:417; Ṣafwat, 3:236); or from the Companion Abū Hurayra: «I shall be the overlord on the Day of Resurrection» (three times in Ibn Ḥibbān, 14:380-1, no. 6465).

In some ways we could say that Muḥammad (and the early generations of Muslims who constructed traditions around him) attempted to monopolise the vocabulary of self-magnification (fakhr, etc.) not only in applying it to God, because He is the only Perfect One, but also applying that vocabulary to Muḥammad himself, insofar as he claimed to have received his own qualities from God. Thus Muḥammad is reported to have used these terms in describing his command of language and other qualities: «I am of the Arabs the one whose language is the most pure and understandable (anā afṣaḥ al-ʿArab)» (al-Suyūṭī, al-Muzhir, 1:209); "I am the most eloquent creature, " etc. (al-Suyūṭī, al-Muzhir, 1:209-13; Wansbrough, 93-4); «I was made superior to people with respect to four qualities: generosity, bravery, frequency of sexual intercourse (kathrat al-jimāʿ), violent power (shiddat al-baṭsh)» (al-Ismāʿīlī, 2:620-1, no. 251; al-Ṭabaranī, al-Awsaṭ, 7:49, no. 6816). These traits—and particularly eloquence—that were highly valued among ancient Arab tribes were transformed into proofs of prophecy (see Gilliot and Larcher, 119-20). This position is also reflected in the attitude of Muḥammad and the first Muslim generations towards poetry. Poets were seen as competing with Muḥammad, but those who praised him were greatly esteemed (Gilliot, Poète ou prophète?, passim).

4. Arrogance in the Qurʾān, in the exegetical tradition, and in ḥadīth

In the Qurʾān the greatest sin is unbelief or being an infidel (kufr). The semantic core of kufr is "ingratitude, " i.e., towards the grace and favour of God (kufr al-niʿma) (Muqātil b. Sulaymān, al-Ashbāh, 97-9; al-Dāmaghānī, 2:187-9; al-Rāghib, 433; Izutsu, 114-7). The unbelievers, i.e., those who do not believe in the message revealed to Muḥammad, but also those who reject the previous prophets, have special attributes, including their use of mockery and their arrogance and haughtiness (Izutsu, 129-31, 131-44). In this respect, Q 40:71-5 is particularly important in that it exemplifies the essential relationship between polytheism (shirk; cf. Q 7:75-6), unbelief, and arrogance.

The semantic field of arrogance in the Qurʾān comprises nine roots (see table 1). The Qurʾān stresses the importance of keeping to the pre-Islamic virtues of «manly ethics» (murūʾa) and ḥilm (cf. Lat. virtus, «the moral reasonableness of a civilised man»; Izutsu, 23-5): «Turn not your cheek in scorn towards folk, nor walk with pertness (maraḥan) in the land. Lo! God loveth not each braggart [nor] boaster (mukhtāl fakhūr). Be modest in thy bearing and subdue thy voice. Lo! The harshest of all voices is the voice of the ass» (Q 31:18-9; Yaḥyā b. Sallām, Tafsīr, ed. Hind Shalabī (Beirut 1425/2004) 2:676-7; al-Ṭabarī, ed. ʿAlī, 21:76). This behaviour is also connected to man’s relationship with God: «God loveth not such as are proud and boastful (mukhtālan fakhūran)» (Q 4:36; al-Ṭabarī, ed. Shākir, 8:349-50; al-Qurṭubī, 5:192). The vice of niggardliness is connected to arrogance, in that only God can be the owner of anything: «That ye grieve not for the sake of that which hath escaped you, nor yet exult because of that which hath been given. Allah loveth not all prideful boasters, who hoard and who enjoin upon the people avarice. And whosoever turneth away, still Allah is the Absolute [al-ghanī, literally „free of all needs, rich“], the Owner of Praise» (Q 57:23-4; al-Thaʿlabī, al-Kashf wa-l-bayān ʿan tafsīr al-Qurʾān, ed. Abū Muḥammad ʿAlī ʿĀshūr (Beirut 2002), 9:245-6). In the same way the accumulation of riches is condemned, and the commentators decried it as a competition in vainglory: «Rivalry in worldly increase (takāthur) distracteth you» (Q 102:1; al-Māturīdī, Taʾwīlāt ahl al-sunna, ed. Fāṭima Yūsuf al-Khaymī (Beirut 2004) 5:513; al-Samīn, 3:2235).

  • k-b-r — 27:27, 27:35; 16:29; 39:60, 39:72; 40:76; 59:23
  • f-kh-r — 4:36; 31:18; 57:20, 57:33
  • b-gh-y — 10:90-1; 28:76-8; 42:26; 42:41-2
  • b-ṭ-r — 28:58
  • ʿ-t-w; ʿ-t-y — 7:166; 25:21; 65:8
  • j-b-r — 19:12-4, 19:31-2; 40:35
  • ṭ-gh-w; ṭ-gh-y — 2:15; 5:64, 5:68; 10:7-8, 10:11; 18:80; 38:55-6; 79:15-19, 79:37-41; 91:11-2
  • gh-n-y — 96:6-7
  • ʿ-l-y — 23:46; 27:13-4; 28:83

Arrogant behaviour towards other human beings incurs God’s displeasure, but arrogance reaches the highest degree of sinfulness when directed towards God. The most commonly found term in this context is the tenth verbal form istakbara (al-Samīn, 3:2218-9): "For when it was said unto them, There is no God save Allah, they were scornful (or "puffed themselves up with pride, « yastakbirūn), and said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?» (Q 37:35-6). In the fifth form of this root, takabbur (with the verb takabbara; Q 27:27; 27:35; 16:29; 39:60; 39:72; 40:76) means «to be sated with what is not from/to one and to feign to be the owner of it.» The fact that a name from the same root—al-mutakkabir ("the Superb, " Q 59:23)—is used for God, appears to have embarrassed some of the later exegetes (al-Samīn, 3:2219; Gimaret, 212-3).

In several mythical narratives of the Quʾrān, two names are particularly associated with arrogance: Satan (Iblīs) and Pharaoh. It was out of pride that the former refused to bow to Adam: «And when We said unto the angels: Prostrate yourselves before Adam, they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. He demurred through pride (abā wa-stakbara), and so became a disbeliever» (Q 2:34; cf. Q 7:13; Q 74-6; Gilliot, De l’impossible censure, 57-67). It was also arrogance that prevented Pharaoh from recognising Moses as a prophet: «Then, after them, We sent Moses and Aaron unto Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our revelations, but they were arrogant (fa-stakbarū) and were a guilty folk» (Q 10:75; also 23:45-6; 28:39).

In ḥadīth the absolute greatness (ʿaẓama, etc.), majesty, and omnipotence of God, in comparison to the humbleness of man and creation, is also a central theme (Gimaret, 208-10, 235-51). Man must not try to compete with God. While majesty is a divine attribute, haughtiness or pride for man is a sin. It is not no a coincidence that this is expressed in a «sacred ḥadīth» (ḥadīth qudsī), in which God Himself is reported to have said to Muḥammad: «Majesty (kibriyāʾ) is My cloak, and grandeur (ʿaẓama) My girdle. Whoever contends with Me in either one of these, him shall I cast into Hell (jahannam)» (al-Muḥāsibī, 232-3; Ibn Abī l-Dunyā, 196-7, no. 195; Graham, 162-3, no. 39). In the same way, al-Ghazālī begins his book Dhamm al-kibr wa-l-ʿujb, "Condemnation of pride and conceit, " with the names of God, which are a censure of human arrogance: al-jabbār, al-mutakabbir, al-ʿalī (al-Ghazālī, Iḥyāʾ, 3:288). Pride is incompatible with true glory: «pride (fakhr) and conceitedness (khuyalāʾ) are found among the owners of horses and camels, who are haughty bawlers (faddād, pl. faddādūn), and among people of the tents, whereas tranquillity is found among those who raise goats and sheep» (Muslim, bk. 1, chap. 21, 1:72, no. 85).

Those who are arrogant will enter Hell: «None shall enter Hell (or Hellfire) who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of faith and none shall enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance (kibr, or pride)» (Muslim, bk. 1, Īmān, 39, 1:93, no. 147-9; Ibn Abī l-Dunyā, 195, no. 192; Ibn Ḥibbān, bk. 44, 6; Ibn Abī l-Dunyā, 12:493-4, no. 5680-1; al-Qushayrī, 215, no. 14.8; 213, no. 14.1). Or from the Companion Hāritha b. Wahb: «I heard the Prophet say: ‘Shall I tell you of the people of Paradise? They comprise every poor, deprived person, and if he swears by God to do something, God will fulfil it; while the people of the fire comprise every (rough) haughty (jawwāẓ), churlish (ʿutull; cf. Q 68:13), arrogant (mustakbir) person’» (al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ, bk. 83, Aymān, 9, IV, 265/Ibn Ḥajar, Fatḥ, 541, no. 6657/al-Bukhārī, trans. Houdas and Marçais, 4:337). Or from Sālim b. ʿAbdallāh, according to his father, Ibn ʿUmar: "The Prophet said: ‘On the Day of Resurrection God will not look at the person who drags his garment (behind him) out of conceit (khuyalāʾa).’ On that Abū Bakr said: «O God’s Apostle! One side of my girdle (izār) hangs low, if I do not take care of it.’ The Prophet said, ‘You are not one of those who do that out of conceit,’» (al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ, bk. 77, Libās, 2, IV, 72/Ibn Ḥajar, Fatḥ, X, 254, no. 5784/al-Bukhārī, trans. Houdas and Marçais, 4:92; Ibn Ḥibbān, Ṣaḥīḥ, bk. 42, Libās, XII, 261, no. 5444; bk. 44, Tawāḍuʿ, 494, no. 5681; cf. Muslim, Ṣaḥīḥ, bk. 37, Libās, chap. 9, III, 1651-2, no. 2085).

Elements of nature such as mountains are also associated with the arrogance or humbleness of man, as in the mythical narratives on the Flood. According to the exegete Mujāhid: «The mountains rose up out of pride in order not to be drowned, but it (i.e., the mountain of al-Jūdī) became humble and did not drown; for that reason the boat of Noah was fixed on it (by God)» (al-Ṭabarī, ed. Shākir, 15:337, no. 18198, ad Q 11:44; al-Qushayrī, 215, 14.8).

In later books on great sins (kabīra, pl. kabāʾir), wearing certain garments or trains in order to attract attention, along with arrogance, pride, and smugness, are considered to belong to this category of sinful conduct (al-Dhahabī, 215-7, 55th great sin; cf. Wensinck, 47a). Even in modern times, women in particular are targeted by the interdiction on wearing clothing with trains, as is illustrated by an Arabic book published in 1987, entitled Instruction for those having understanding on arrogance, pride, trains, and all that is forbidden to women in their garments (al-ʿAmrawī).

5. Arrogance in adab and the philosophical tradition

The theme of arrogance is also well represented in belles lettres (adab), "mirrors for princes, " waṣiyyas (literally, "testamentary dispositions, " but also doctrinal and ethical books of advice), admonitions (naṣīḥa; for discussion of both naṣīḥa and waṣiyya, see Gilliot, In consilium tuum deduces me), letters, and political writings. A letter attributed to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib addressed to al-Ashtar (d. c. 37/658), the governor of Egypt, provides an example: «Do not say: ‘I have been made a commander (innī muʾammar), I command and I am obeyed,’ because this corrupts the heart, weakens one’s religion, and induces vagaries (ghiyar) [in dynasties]. Should you be elated by authority (sulṭān), or should you ever feel (symptoms of) self-magnification and self-conceit (ubbaha aw makhīla), then look at the grandeur (ʿiẓam) and power (qudra) of God’s governance, over which you have absolutely no control…. Beware! Never put yourself against the grandeur of God and never imitate His omnipotence (jabarūt); for God humiliates every tyrant/oppressor (jabbār) and brings down everyone who is arrogant (mukhtāl)» (al-Sharīf al-Raḍī, Nahj al-balāgha, rev. Ṣubḥī al-Ṣāliḥ (Beirut 1967), 248; Ibn Abī l-Ḥadīd, Sharḥ Nahj al-balāgha, ed. Muḥammad Abū l-Faḍl Ibrāhīm (Cairo 1958-64, repr. Beirut 19792) 17:32-3). The great secretaries (kuttāb) of the caliphs, princes, governors, and such addressed letters and treatises to their masters on the exercise of power, putting them on their guard against arrogance and haughtiness, as did ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd (d. 132/750) in his letter of admonition (naṣīḥa) to the heir apparent ʿUbaydallāh b. Marwān al-Umawī (ʿAbbās, 224-5).

The Muʿtazilī and man of letters al-Jāḥiẓ (d. 255/869), who was much interested in vices, wrote a small treatise entitled «True and affected nobleness, and censure of pride» (al-Nubl wa-l-tanabbul wa-ḍamm al-kibr), containing a set of words in the fifth verbal form—tafaʿʿala (e.g., mutakabbir, mutajabbir) that express the idea of «to strive in order to show off» (al-Jāḥiẓ, ed. Pellat, 259-60). He composed another treatise entitled Fakhr al-Sūdān ʿalā l-biḍān ("The pride of blacks over whites, " in al-Jāḥiẓ, Rasāʾil, 1:177-226), in which he distinguishes between «true pride» and unacceptable pride.

In the philosophical tradition, Greek philosophy was more influential than the Islamic legacy, as it can be seen in the treatise on ethics of Miskawayh (d. 421/1030), when he speaks on the subject of friendship. For him, the friend who likes to command is often led by arrogance and conceit (al-khuyalāʾ wa-l-tīh) and does not attach much importance to his friends (Miskawayh, 133-4; trans. Arkoun, 244). He is also guided by smugness (ʿujb; Miskawayh, Tahdhīb, 163-5; trans. Arkoun, 296-9) and vainglory (ṣalaf; Miskawayh, 136; trans. Arkoun, 248).

Even today, words describing arrogance are used in a way that continues to reflect pre-modern connotations. For example, during the Iranian revolution of 1979, champions of the revolution labelled as «arrogant» (mustakbirūn) those who supported the regime of the shah. After the revolution, this qualification was used in a broader sense to describe all the purported external enemies of the revolution (Gieling, 100).
