The act of making an offering to a deity or the offering itself. In Arabic, these are commonly rendered by the roots, ḍ-ḥ-y, q-r-b and dh-b-ḥ. The first root, which in ¶ the second form can mean to sacrifice an animal during the period of daylight called al- duḥā, is not attested in the Qurʾān, though ʿīd al-adḥā, “feast of the sacrifice,” has become the primary name for the one great sacrificial ritual in Islam, occurring during the daylight hours of the tenth of the month of dhū l- ḥijja (see months; day, times of; noon) as a part of the major pilgrimage (q.v.; ḥajj). In contemporary usage, some Muslims refer to this feast as ʿīd al- qurbān or, in Turkish, qurbān bayram, and this word occurs in the Qurʾān three times. q 3:183: “…those who say: God has covenanted with us that we not believe in a messenger until he brings for us a qurbān that fire [presumably from heaven] will eat,” and q 5:27: “Relate to them the true story of the two sons of Adam (see adam and eve; cain and abel), when they [each] offered a sacrifice (idh qarrabā qurbānan),” a reference to the narratives found in 1 Kings 18 and Genesis 4. The root of qurbān is common in Arabic, Hebrew and Aramaic/ Syriac (in which “qūrbānā” is the term for the Christian Eucharist; see christians and christianity ) as well as Assyrian and Ethiopian but the morphology of the word suggests a NW Semitic origin. The third locus, q 46:28, is a difficult verse (see difficult passages ). Some commentators understand it to mean something like “mediators” (Zamakhsharī, Kashshāf, iii, 526) but this seems to ignore syntactical and contextual aspects of the verse (see grammar and the qurʾān; exegesis of the qurʾān: classical and medieval). Dh-b-ḥ occurs in three qurʾānic contexts in the sense of sacrifice (as opposed to, simply, “slaughter” in q 2:49; 14:6; 27:21; 28:4; see slaughter ). In q 2:67 and 71, Moses (q.v.) tells the Israelites (see children of israel ) that God commands their sacrifice of a cow, which they do in a sequence that recalls the “red heifer” of ¶ Numbers 19:2 (see calf of gold; narratives). q 5:3 forbids making sacrifice on stone altars typically used for dedication to an idol (ʿalā l- nuṣub; see idols and images ). q 37:102 and 107 occur in the story of Abraham's (q.v.) intended sacrifice of his son. Abraham informs his son that he will sacrifice him (annī adhbaḥuka, q 37:102). Later we are told that God redeemed the son with a magnificent sacrifice as a substitute (wa-fadaynāhu bi-dhibḥin ʿaẓīmin, q 37:107). This is the “intended sacrifice” (al- dhabīḥ) that is today commemorated in the “feast of the sacrifice” mentioned above, though neither the Qurʾān nor early tradition literature (see ḥadīth and the qurʾān ) makes this connection (Ṭabarī, Tafsīr, xxiii, 81-8). The related word, uhilla (fourth form of the root h-l-l), is taken by some commentators to refer to slaughter but most understand it to mean invoking the name of God upon an animal when slaughtering it (Ṭabarī, Tafsīr, ii, 85-6; Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ, i, 331; Qurṭubī, Jāmiʿ, ii, 150-1; see basmala; consecration of animals). In all cases the Qurʾān forbids doing so in the name of anything other than God ( q 2:173; 5:3; 6:145; 16:115). Tradition, then, understands the Qurʾān to prescribe invoking the name of God when slaughtering and that God rather than anything other is the object to which sacrifice is to be made. q 22:27-37 places both within the context of the pilgrimage. Ritually fit animals are to be slaughtered as the name of God is invoked over the act. They are then eaten and shared with the poor and unfortunate (see poverty and the poor; almsgiving; community and society in the qurʾān). Perhaps because this ritual act of eating a communal meal represented a change from a system in which sacrificial offerings were left for the gods, the section concludes with the statement ( q 22:37): “Neither their flesh nor ¶ their blood will reach God, but your religious devotion (al- taqwā minkum; see piety ) will reach him.” |

a victim destined for immolation according to Muslim law, in fulfilment of a vow, nad̲h̲r , for example, or for the sacrifice of ʿaḳiḳa , or on the occasion of the feast of the 10th day of D̲h̲u ’l-ḥid̲j̲d̲j̲a (then called ḍaḥiyya ), or in order to make atonement for certain transgressions committed during the ḥad̲j̲d̲j̲ (the victim in this case being known as hadī ).
This d̲h̲abīḥa must be slaughtered according to a strict ritual known as d̲h̲akāʾa . Its form does not differ from the ritual slaughter of animals permitted as food: hence it is with this type of slaughter that we shall now concern ourselves. The differences between the various schools of law in this regard are comparatively unimportant. However, on this question, as with the rest of fiḳh , in order to adopt not only a theoretical but also a sociological point ot view, it would be necessary to show what the actual practice on this matter has been throughout the world of Islam as whole. On this subject we shall limit ourselves to a single observation. The matter is briefly referred to in the Ḳurʾān (v, 4, vi, 147) and dealt with at greater length in the collections of traditions and the texts of fiḳh. 1. What animals are proper subjects for ritual slaughter? The list does not coincide exactly with that of the animals that are permissible as food. For in the first place there are those animals which may be eaten without any necessity of ritual slaughter— grasshoppers or fish, for example (these latter, indeed, may be eaten even if found dead); in the second place there are special rules, which are not our present concern, applicable to hunting, and finally the foetus which is almost at term is permissible ¶ as food if its mother has been ritually slaughtered. On the other hand it is recommended that animals which are not lawful food should be slaughtered according to ritual in order to avoid any prolonged suffering. Nevertheless it is, in general, with a view to being able to eat the animal concerned that a ritual slaughter takes place, and this is the more so since the d̲h̲abīḥa, the sacrificial victim, is normally eaten. It may be remarked that a ritual slaughter makes the flesh of the animal lawful even if the animal is already sick or mortally wounded and the slaughter does no more than accelerate its end. 2. Who may perform ritual slaughter? It is lawful, although blameworthy, for the people of the Book to perform it on behalf of Muslims. On the other hand it is in no way prohibited, nor, even, is it reprehensible (contrary to a curious superstition which prevails in North Africa, for example) for a woman to kill an animal such as a chicken. (One observer has reported that at Tangier, if women are of necessity obliged to do this, they place a phallic symbol between their thighs). All those authorized to act as slaughterers must be in possession of their mental faculties. 3. How is the slaughter (d̲h̲akāʾa) effected? Four methods of killing may be distinguished of which only the first two need concern us: the d̲h̲abḥ ; the naḥr (see below); the wounding or ʿaḳr (which is important with regard to the theory of hunting); any other method of killing. For the d̲h̲abīḥa to be validly put to death and the animal concerned to be permissible as food then either the d̲h̲abḥ or the naḥr should be employed according to the circumstances. Otherwise the dead animal will be regarded as carrion ( mayta ) and therefore legally unfit for consumption except in the case of absolute necessity. At the moment of slaughter it is obligatory to have the necessary intention and to invoke the name of God. The d̲h̲abḥ is the normal method of slaughter, for the naḥr is applicable only to camels (there are some differences of opinion among the schools as to the obligatory or simply praiseworthy character of these provisions). The d̲h̲abḥ consists of slitting the throat, including the trachea and the oesophagus; (as for the two jugular veins there are divergencies between the schools); the head is not to be severed. Preferably the victim should be laid upon its left side facing in the direction of the ḳibla . As for the naḥr, it consists of driving the knife in by the throat without it being necessary to cut in the manner prescribed above, the camel remaining upright but at the same time facing the ḳibla. There are some casuistic discussions regarding the nature of the instrument to be used. More important is the fact that many provisions of fiḳh bear witness to an anxiety that the victims should be spared any unnecessary suffering. In particular the knife ought to be well sharpened; the practice of collective slaughtering is condemned, as too is that of cutting off part of an animal or removing its skin (except in the case of fish) before it is dead. |

Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition / Ḳurbān
Ḳurbān — sacrifice, sacrificial victim, The word goes back to the Hebrew forbin, perhaps through the intermediary of the Aramaic (cf. Mingana, Syriac influence on the style of the Kur’ān, in Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, xi (1927), 85; S. Frankel, De vocabulis in . .. corano peregrinis, 20), The language of the Kur’ān, as is well known, shows a preference for religious technical ters ending in -ān and some of them are not always used with their original significations. This is true of turban, which occurs three times in the Kur’ān, In siras III, 179 and V, 30 it obviously means sacrifice. In sira XLVI, 27, however, we read: “Did those help them, whom they had taken for kurban as gods to the exclusion of Allah!’ Here the word must be more or less synonymous with “gods”. Probably it has a meaning which is connected with the Arabic k-r-b (see below); the commentators take the same view and the word is explained as “mediators” [see SHAFA‘A).
The word hardly seems to occur in classical badith. The Lisām mentions two traditions which are striking enough: “The characteristic of the community (i.e. the Muslims) lies in the fact that their Aurbdn is their blood", i.e. that instead of sacrifice they have offered the blood of their martyrs. And the other: “The salat is the sacrifice of every pious man”. We may suppose there are apologetic tendencies in both traditions.
The term also came to be applied in Muslim ritual to the killing of an animal on the 10-th Dbu ‘l-Hidjdja and the whole celebration on this and the following tashriq days is called ‘Id al-Kurban (cf. ‘Id aL-adha] in Turkish-speaking countries Kurban-bayrami (cf. BAYRAM).
In Christian-Arabic the word means the eucharist; ef. G. Graf, Verzeichnis arabischer kirklicher Termini® (= CSCO, 147), Louvain 1954: the con- secrated elements, especially the host; ‘Id al-Kurban = feast of Corpus Christi.
In conclusion it should be pointed out that there seems to be a genuine Arabic word kurban, plur. kardbin, which means the courtiers and councillors in immediate attendance on a king; the word probably comes directly from k-r-b) “‘to be near”.
Г. Граф, Вержичнис Арабишер Kirklicher Termini® (CSCO, 147), Лувьи 1954: конференции, особенно хозяин; «ID Al-Kurban = Peag of Corpus Christi.
